A might have been about four historical figures who may or may not have ever met.

In 1882, a widow named Mrs. Teal is the hostess to a meeting between two Civil War veterans and their wives.  Robert Todd Lincoln currently serves as Secretary of War.  Colonel (retired) Henry Rathbone was in the Presidential Box at Ford's Theatre when Robert's father was assassinated.  Seventeen years later, they and their wives meet at a brownstone mansion in New York.  Both their wives, each of whom was the daughter of a Senator as well as good friends of the former First Lady, Mary Todd Lincoln, wonder why this meeting is taking place.

We, and they, find out as Mrs. Teal introduces us to events--from the point of view of someone long dead speaking to those (as far she is concerned) not yet born.
